Industrially, sodium metabisulphite is employed in dyeing, organic synthesis, printing, leather processing, and pharmaceuticals. In food processing, it is used as a preservative, bleaching agent, and leavening agent.

It is also used as a chemical reagent (in dyeing and photography), as a bleaching agent, mordant, reducing agent, rubber coagulant, and in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, and fragrance production.

1.Chemical Industry

In the chemical industry, sodium metabisulphite is widely used as a raw material and catalyst in various chemical reactions, particularly in the production of sodium hydrosulfite, sodium sulfide, sulfate compounds, and other chemical products. It reacts with numerous compounds and is utilized in organic synthesis for the preparation of various intermediates such as benzaldehyde and phenyl sulfone. As a strong reducing agent, it ensures efficient chemical reactions, making it a popular choice in industrial production.

2.Water Treatment

In water treatment processes, sodium metabisulphite is primarily used as a reducing agent to help remove harmful substances and pollutants from water, particularly in the treatment of industrial wastewater and drinking water. Sodium metabisulphite is commonly used as a dechlorination agent in water treatment. It effectively neutralizes free chlorine and combined chlorine in the water, producing harmless chloride ions (Cl-), thereby reducing chlorine residue and ensuring water quality safety. Sodium metabisulphite can also be used as a reducing agent for heavy metal ions. It can reduce toxic heavy metal ions, such as chromium, cadmium, and lead, to less toxic or water-insoluble compounds, causing these metals to precipitate from the wastewater. In certain industrial processes, wastewater may contain strong oxidizers such as peroxides and hypochlorites. Sodium metabisulphite can chemically reduce these strong oxidizers to harmless substances, protecting equipment and preventing wastewater from harming the environment.

3.Food Industry

Sodium metabisulphite is widely used in the food processing industry as a preservative, bleaching agent, and leavening agent. It effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria and molds, extending the shelf life of food products such as canned fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, juices, wines, and beer. As a bleaching agent, it prevents the oxidation of natural pigments in food, ensuring the food maintains its appearance during storage and sale. In baking, it acts as a leavening agent, improving the texture of dough and making baked goods softer. Additionally, due to its antioxidant properties, it prevents the loss of vitamin C, enhancing the nutritional value of food products.

4.Pharmaceutical Industry

Sodium metabisulphite plays a significant role in the pharmaceutical industry, mainly in the production of sulfa drugs such as sulfamethazine and aminopyrine. These drugs are effective in treating infections, inflammation, and pain, and are widely used to combat respiratory and urinary tract infections. Sodium metabisulphite acts as a reducing agent during the synthesis of these drugs, ensuring their effectiveness. Additionally, it can be used as a preservative in certain medications, extending their shelf life and reducing the risk of degradation during storage.

5.Mining Applications

In the mining industry, sodium metabisulphite is used as a flotation agent, aiding in the separation and extraction of valuable minerals, such as gold and silver. During the flotation process, sodium metabisulphite acts as a depressant, preventing unwanted minerals from adhering to target minerals, thereby increasing extraction efficiency. In the environmental sector, sodium metabisulphite is widely used for wastewater treatment, particularly in the oil and gas industry. It neutralizes toxic substances in wastewater, such as chlorine and heavy metals, reducing environmental pollution. Additionally, it helps treat sulfur compounds in oil fields, reducing sulfur pollution and improving wastewater treatment outcomes.

6.Textile and Leather Industry

In the textile and leather industries, sodium metabisulphite plays a crucial role. It is widely used as a reducing agent in textile dyeing, helping dyes bond more effectively with fibers and improving the uniformity and durability of the color. It is particularly effective with certain vat dyes, enhancing the stability and efficiency of the dyeing process. In leather processing, sodium metabisulphite is used as a dechlorinating agent, removing residual chlorine after bleaching and preventing damage to the leather. This treatment improves the softness and strength of the leather while giving it a cleaner appearance.

7.Photographic Industry

In traditional photography, sodium metabisulphite is an essential ingredient in fixing solutions, helping stabilize and preserve images. After film or photographic paper is exposed and developed, unreacted silver halides can cause the image to continue darkening when exposed to light. Sodium metabisulphite effectively removes these unreacted silver halides, ensuring the photograph remains stable and unaffected by further light exposure. It also helps maintain the clarity and contrast of the image, ensuring high-quality photographs. Although digital photography has largely replaced traditional film photography, sodium metabisulphite is still used in some professional and artistic photography processes.

8.Other Industrial Applications

Beyond the aforementioned uses, sodium metabisulphite has many other industrial applications. In the rubber industry, it serves as a coagulant, helping latex quickly solidify into rubber, thereby enhancing production efficiency. In the glass manufacturing sector, it is used as a bleaching agent and flux, improving the transparency and strength of glass products. In the electroplating industry, sodium metabisulphite is used in metal surface treatments, effectively removing oxidation layers and facilitating smoother electroplating processes. Moreover, it finds applications in the fragrance industry, pharmaceutical synthesis, and other areas, acting as a versatile chemical raw material with broad industrial value.
