Unsaturated polyester resin is a commonly used resin system in fiberglass composites, known for its excellent processing and curing properties. After curing, it exhibits high strength and hardness. Additionally, unsaturated polyester resin has good chemical resistance and water resistance. However, it has poor weather resistance and is prone to aging due to ultraviolet light exposure.

Vinyl ester resin is a new type of resin system modified from unsaturated polyester resin and epoxy resin. Although vinyl ester resin is relatively expensive, it performs exceptionally well in applications requiring high corrosion resistance and weatherability.

“Polyester” is a type of polymer containing ester bonds, distinguished from resins such as phenolic and epoxy. This polymer is produced through a polycondensation reaction between a diacid and a diol. When this polymer contains unsaturated double bonds, it is referred to as unsaturated polyester. When this unsaturated polyester dissolves in a polymerizable monomer (usually styrene) and forms a viscous liquid, it is called unsaturated polyester resin.

Specific types of unsaturated polyester resins include winding resins, spray-up resins, RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) resins, pultrusion resins, SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) resins, BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) resins, flame-retardant resins, food-grade resins, anti-corrosion resins, air-drying resins, polyester panel resins, craft resins, button resins, agate resins, artificial stone resins, high transparency resins, crystal resins, and automotive putty resins.

Based on their structure, unsaturated polyester resins can be classified into ortho-phthalic, iso-phthalic, terephthalic, bisphenol-A, and vinyl ester types.

Based on their performance, they can be divided into general-purpose, anti-corrosion, self-extinguishing, heat-resistant, and low-shrinkage types.

Additionally, they can be categorized by their primary use into two main groups: resins for fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) and resins for non-FRP applications. Fiberglass-reinforced products refer to those made from resin reinforced with fiberglass and its products, also known as fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP). Non-FRP products are made from resin mixed with inorganic fillers or used alone, also referred to as non-reinforced fiberglass products.
