Borax Anhydrous

The properties of anhydrous borax are white crystals or colorless glassy crystals, the melting point of α orthorhombic crystal is 742.5 ° C, and the density is 2.28; It has strong hygroscopicity, dissolves in water, glycerin, and slowly dissolves in methanol to form a solution with a concentration of 13-16%. Its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline and insoluble in alcohol. Anhydrous borax is an anhydrous product obtained when borax is heated to 350-400°C.

Borax Anhydrous

Molecular weight : 201.22

Appearance: white powder, colorless crystal

Density:2.28g/cm3

Melting point :742.5℃

Highly hygroscopic, soluble in water, slowly soluble in methanol, and can form a solution with a concentration of 13-16%.

Metallurgical level smelting and casting, metal ingots, heat-resistant and high-quality glass, optical glass manufacturing. It can also be used as a flux for alloys.
Borax Decahydrate

Molecular weight : 381.37

Odorless, salty taste

Density:1.73g/cm3

Melting point :Heat to 350-400 ℃ convert to Na2B4O7

Easily soluble in water, also soluble in glycerol, insoluble in alcohol. Its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline and appears as a colorless glass when melted.

It has important and widespread applications in metallurgy, steel, machinery, papermaking, electron tubes, chemicals, and textiles.
Borax Pentahydrate

Molecular weight : 291.3

White crystalline powder

Density:1.815g/cm3

Melting point :Heat to 120℃ losing crystal water

Easily soluble in hot water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and carbon tetrachloride. The aqueous solution is alkaline.

It is recrystallized from a decahydrate sodium tetraborate solution at a crystallization temperature above 60°C, then filtered and dried below 120°C. It can also be obtained by dissolving natural boron ore in hot water.
Chemical and Physical Properties

A highly concentrated source of boric oxide for glazes. Anhydrous borax is made by burning or fusing hydrated borax. It thus contains little or no water of crystallization and does not rehydrate under normal storage conditions. Anhydrous borax is water soluble, but considerably less so than raw borax (in aqueous solution it can provide slow release of boron).

Application

This material is used as a source of B2O3 in the manufacture of many different types of borosilicate glass, including heat and chemical resistant glasses, illumination glasses, optical lenses, medical and cosmetic containers, hollow microspheres and glass beads. It has a higher bulk density and melts more rapidly than raw forms of borax. It also provides a source of sodium.

Chemical Materials

Borate ions (commonly supplied as boric acid) are used in biochemical and chemical laboratories to make buffers.

Detergent Production

Borax is used in various household laundry and cleaning products, including Boraxo powdered hand soap, and some tooth bleaching formulas.

Textile Industry

Anti-fungal compound for cellulose insulation , Mothproofing 10% solution for wool.

Water Treatment

Water system  agent to control pH.

Metal welding

A mixture of borax and ammonium chloride is used as a flux when welding iron and steel.

Metallurgical Industry

In artisanal gold mining, borax is sometimes used as part of a process known as the borax method (as a flux)
