Sodium cyanide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaCN. It appears as a white crystalline powder that is highly hygroscopic and emits a faint almond-like odor. It is highly toxic. Sodium cyanide dissolves easily in water, forming a strongly alkaline solution. As a critical basic chemical raw material, it is widely used in fundamental chemical synthesis, electroplating, metallurgy, and organic synthesis for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and metal processing as a complexing and masking agent.

Sodium cyanide has been used in the extraction of gold from ore for over a century. Today it is still considered the most efficient extraction method – with sodium cyanide used in the leaching process in most gold mining operations.
In gold mining, sodium cyanide is primarily used to extract gold via the cyanidation process. Cyanidation is a mineral extraction method where cyanide solutions are used to leach gold from ores. Depending on the characteristics of the ore and processing requirements, cyanidation can be divided into two main types: agitation cyanidation and percolation cyanidation. Agitation cyanidation is primarily applied to flotation gold concentrates or all-slime cyanidation, while percolation cyanidation is mainly used to process low-grade gold oxide ores.
